How to prepare for your new puppy

-Items you may find helpful-

  • Kennel/Crate: For up to 20lbs. This will work best for training.

  • Puppy Food: Iams Large Breed Puppy (the yellow bag) is what they are started on.

  • Food & Water Dishes/Bowls

  • Chew Toys: We avoid all rawhides for our dogs and puppies. They can easily choke on them when they get to a certain size. Instead, we use deer antlers, nyla-bones(supervised), and kong toys. We also bring out other fun toys but they always seem to go for the antlers.

  • Collar & Leash: We love the Coastal brand. For Collars, 10-14'' will fit your puppy and allow him/her to grow.

  • Poop Bags for walks and outings

  • Pooper Scooper for cleaning up the yard: We prefer the rake type over the clamp/claw kind.

  • Doodle Brush: We use the "We Love Doodles Dog Slicker Brush" size large

  • Nail Trimmer

  • Puppy Shampoo: Found in nearly any dog isle. Our go-to is the WAHL brand.

-What to expect the first week or two-

  • Crying/whining during parts of the day and night will be normal at their new home. Your puppy is used to being with their littermates.

  • Your puppy's new environment may cause him/her to have loose stools. This will pass in time.

  • Your puppy has been learning how to climb up and down stairs (only a 3-step stairs) but has not mastered them yet. Higher structures like couches are dangerous for your puppy to jump off until he/she gets bigger. Your puppy's bones and joints have a lot of growing to do and as flexible as they are, they can also break easily.

-Training tips-

  • When training your new puppy, it's very important that everyone in the home is consistent with the same words being used and discipline. This includes any children who live in the home. Puppies are very smart and will catch on to who they are around and what they can get away.

  • Regular puppy food works great as treats for training! It's what we use because it's always on hand, nice for the budget, and it's something we know the pups' stomachs can handle at a young age.

-Vet Appointment-

  • All puppies will go home after a visit from the Vet, having a wellness check and their first round of shots. These visits are scheduled for 6 weeks of age.

  • Our vet recommends having their next shots at about 10 weeks old and then again at 14 weeks old. Your vet may have a different opinion so it's very important to call ahead to your local Veterinarian's Office and schedule your puppy's visit.

-Grooming your Doodle-

  • Goldendoodles need to be brushed often so their fur does not get tangled and the undercoat will not get matted. Exposing your new puppy to a brush (and the sound of an electric razor/trimmer) is important so they learn young that it's a positive experience!

  • Finding a Groomer for your puppy early is ideal. Some businesses schedule far out. Depending on how you like your puppy's coat to look, you may need it trimmed 6 months, 3 months, or even sooner than that.

  • If you can't find a groomer or want advice on a groomer and you live in the Rochester, MN area (or surrounding communities) please reach out to us. Our Groomer, Becca, is AMAZING!
This is from Becca: "I've been grooming for about 12 years. I was professionally trained through PetSmart's training program and I'm a certified professional groomer. I chose to leave the Grooming Salon world and groom on my own because I did not believe the salons are the best environment for dogs. I feel having a relationship with the dogs is a much better way to work with them."

She's definitely an animal lover and your animals will fall in love with her, too!
