All About Doodles

At Kedron Creek Doodles, we offer Multigen Goldendoodles and Irish Goldendoodles (ours are 50% Irish Setter, 37.5% Poodle 12.5% Golden Retriever). Read below to see the difference between generations of doodles!

Doodles have become the top breed to own. With their beautiful non-shedding fur, their calm and friendly demeanors, and quick learning skills, these *hypoallergenic pets are a favorite for many animal lovers. Breeders began to cross breed purebred breeds with poodles in hopes of obtaining a dog with the poodle's non-shedding coat as well as other desirable characteristics from other breeds. There are several types of Doodles but the most common is the Golden Doodle which is a Golden Retriever bred with a Poodle. There are different generations of Golden Doodles, the more that the breed is back crossed, the better the characteristics are. For example, F1 Golden Doodles are 50% Golden Retriever 50% Poodle so they will shed more, but a Multigen has been back crossed and bred back so they will not shed much if at all.

What does the "F" mean? Every generation begins with the letter "F," meaning "Filial." This means that this dog breed came from two purebred dogs. The letter "F" simply means the dog is coming from purebred lineage.

What does the number mean? The generation of a Doodle correlates with the number associated with it. So, 1 means first generation (example: parents are a Golden Retriever and Poodle), 2 means second generation, and 3 means third generation.

What does the "B" mean? Some Doodle generations have a "B" at the end, suggesting it is a backcross. Backcrossing means that a Doodle is bred back with a purebred Poodle. This is where you'll get the coat differences in your Doodle. The more Poodle, the less shedding. The more backcrossing, the curlier/wavier the fur will typically be.

Below explains the level of their generation:

F1 Golden Doodle = Golden Retriever bred with Poodle

F1b Golden Doodle = F1 Golden Doodle with a purebred Poodle (F1-back cross)

F2 Golden Doodle = F1 Golden Doodle bred with an F1 Golden Doodle

F2b Golden Doodle = F2 Golden Doodle bred with a purebred Poodle (F2-back cross)

F3/Multigen= F1b Golden Doodle bred with F1b Golden Doodle

Golden Doodle traits include their colored curly/wavy fur, friendly disposition, easily trainable, family friendly, and they are extremely sociable. These breeds have become extremely sought after due to their hypoallergenic* coats and their funny personalities. Standard Golden Doodles will grow to be over 21 inches tall and weigh up to 75lbs. Golden Doodles are extremely intelligent. They are known to have been successfully trained as therapy dogs, guide dogs, nut-detection dogs, and other assistance dogs. (We offer Medium sized Goldendoodles that will weigh up to 35lbs)

Irish Golden Doodles are very similar to Golden Doodles, however it's a cross between Golden Retriever, Poodle, and Irish Setter. You still get the great qualities and traits as a Golden Doodle such as minimal or non-shedding, great personalities, smart, and easily trainable, but with adding the Irish Setter you will see a silkier coat which is that traditional look that people often love about an Irish Setter.  Standard Irish Golden Doodles will grow to be 24 inches tall and will weigh up to 75lbs. They are athletic, good natured and don't bark often just like Golden Doodles. (We offer Medium sized Irish Doodles that will weigh up to 35-40lbs)

Doodles have many great qualities but it's very important that you choose the right breed for your lifestyle. Train them young, find a groomer, and love them forever!

*Hypoallergenic coats in a dog can vary by breed, generation, and by dog. A hypoallergenic dog is a dog breed that is less likely to cause an allergic reaction in people who suffer from allergies. This is because hypoallergenic dogs have a low-shedding coat, which means they produce less dander and saliva, the two main allergens that trigger allergies in humans. It's important to note that no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic; however, Doodles are less likely to cause an allergic reaction due to their fur type. There is no guarantee that a person with allergies will not react to a hypoallergenic dog. The best thing to do is see an allergy specialist and if they agree, spend time around the breed to see if there are any reactions.
